Ross Greene’s Plan B, done proactively
Ross Greene’s Plan B works best proactively: hold the conversation in a calm window before the next explosion, not in the middle of one.
Why it works
Problem-solving capacity requires a regulated nervous system. A child in the middle of an explosion has minimal access to prefrontal reasoning, so a conversation during the crisis solves nothing and often makes things worse. Proactive Plan B uses the calm window between episodes to build the solution when both the child’s and the adult’s thinking brains are fully online. The reason timing matters this much is that Plan B asks for exactly the capacities high arousal takes offline first: holding two competing concerns in mind at once, generating alternatives, and inhibiting the first impulse long enough to evaluate them. Under acute stress, prefrontal regulation gives way to faster, more reflexive responding — which is why a mid-explosion conversation reliably produces either capitulation or a power struggle rather than a solution. Greene also draws a distinction the timing depends on: the explosion is the symptom, and the unsolved problem underneath it is the thing Plan B is actually for. That problem is still there when everyone is calm, which is precisely why it can be solved then. Doing it proactively also changes what the child learns from the episode — instead of associating the topic with a fight they lost, they get repeated practice at the collaborative skill itself, in the only state where practice can stick.
How to do it
- Identify the recurring unsolved problem (the trigger, not the symptom) from the last explosion.
- Initiate Plan B at a neutral time — not right after an incident, not during a transition the child is already resisting.
- If the child isn’t ready to talk, schedule a time: "Can we figure this out after dinner?"
- Write down the agreed solution and revisit it when the situation next arises.
Evidence
The proactive vs. reactive timing principle is grounded in executive function research: stress and high arousal narrow the cognitive bandwidth needed for flexible problem-solving. Acute stress is shown to impair prefrontal cortex structure and function directly, and a meta-analysis confirms acute stress degrades core executive functions — the very capacities a Plan B conversation depends on. This is a clinical application of well-established arousal–performance principles; the specific advantage of proactive timing has not been separately randomized.
