Why it works

Porges proposes that the middle ear is tuned to the frequency range of the human voice — a mammalian adaptation that would allow distinguishing a nurturing voice from environmental threat or low-frequency predator sounds. That specific claim is part of the contested portion of Polyvagal theory and has not been directly confirmed. What is well established independently is that vocal prosody — melodic, warm, naturally inflected speech — carries emotional signal fast and largely below deliberate thought, while a monotone, flat, or harsh voice reads as alarm or shutdown to a listener regardless of the words. That is the practical reason tone often does more regulating work than content, whichever account of the underlying anatomy proves correct.

How to do it

  1. When in a high-stress interaction, consciously lower your speaking volume rather than raising it.
  2. Vary your pitch slightly — a monotone voice reads as alarm or shutdown to the listener’s nervous system.
  3. Slow your rate of speech by 10–15 percent.
  4. Notice whether the other person’s body language shifts in response.

Evidence
