Benefits of humming: what is actually measured, and what is not
Humming reliably lengthens the exhale and raises nasal nitric oxide; claims beyond that — for vocal health, immunity or the heart — are not established.
Why it works
Vocalizing on the exhale naturally lengthens it (the established vagal lever) and the vagus nerve innervates the larynx and pharynx, so humming and chanting are thought to add mild laryngeal vagal engagement on top of the breathing effect. The vibration and slow, sustained sound also tend to be subjectively calming. One further effect has been directly measured: Weitzberg and Lundberg (2002) found that humming produces a large increase in nasal nitric oxide compared with quiet exhalation, attributed to the oscillating airflow improving gas exchange between the paranasal sinuses and the nasal cavity. It is worth being careful about what that finding does and does not license. It is a measurement of a gas concentration in the nasal airway, and it is frequently cited onward as evidence that humming benefits immunity, fights viruses, or improves cardiovascular health — none of which that study tested or showed. Similarly, humming is often recommended for vocal health as a gentle warm-up on the reasoning that it phonates at low effort, but that is a common practice in voice training rather than a demonstrated clinical benefit, and anyone with an actual voice problem wants a speech-language pathologist rather than a breathing exercise. The honest summary is that the long exhale is doing most of the work you can feel.
How to do it
- Take a comfortable breath in, then hum or tone on a long, steady exhale.
- Let the exhale be slow and complete; feel the vibration in the throat, chest, or face.
- Repeat for several rounds, or use a sustained "voo"/"om" if that feels natural.
- Notice the settling rather than straining for volume.
Evidence
Humming/chanting plausibly works mainly by extending the exhale (well supported) plus possible laryngeal vagal involvement. Small studies on chanting/"om" report relaxation and some autonomic shifts, but the direct vagal-stimulation claim is not firmly established. (mechanistic)
Much of the benefit is probably the long exhale, not a special "vagus hack." Treat humming as a pleasant, low-risk extension of slow breathing rather than a proven nerve stimulator. The nasal nitric-oxide rise is well measured, but no health outcome has been shown to follow from it — popular claims about immunity, antiviral effects, sinus treatment or cardiovascular benefit go well beyond the evidence. Benefits for vocal health specifically are a voice-training convention, not a demonstrated result.
