Right nostril vs left nostril breathing: the energizing side

In pranayama the right nostril is the activating channel and the left the calming one — a longstanding teaching resting on thin physiological evidence.

Why it works

The right-versus-left distinction comes from yogic tradition, where the right nostril is the pingala nadi, associated with heat, activity and alertness, and the left is the ida nadi, associated with cooling and calm. Unilateral practice is therefore prescribed by intent: right for rousing, left for settling. The physiological account usually offered is that nasal airflow is naturally asymmetric and alternates over hours (the nasal cycle, which is well documented), and that unilateral breathing shifts autonomic balance — right toward sympathetic activation, left toward parasympathetic. That autonomic-laterality claim is the weak link and should be held loosely: it rests on a handful of small studies with inconsistent results, and no strong mechanism connects one nostril to one hemisphere. Some studies report small increases in heart rate or metabolic rate with right-nostril breathing; others do not find the pattern. What can be said with more confidence is that any slow, attentive, effortful breathing pattern occupies attention and slows the breath, which is plausibly doing much of the work people attribute to the side. Treat this as a traditional practice worth trying for how it lands on you, not as a physiological switch.

How to do it

  1. Close the left nostril with the right ring finger.
  2. Inhale through the right nostril only, with a slightly faster pace than the calming practices — perhaps 4-count in and 4-count out.
  3. Keep the exhalation complete but do not extend it beyond the inhale (that would shift the ratio toward calming).
  4. Continue for 5–8 breath cycles.
  5. Release and breathe normally; notice whether alertness has increased.

Evidence

A small number of studies, several from the same research group, report that right-nostril breathing is associated with modest increases in metabolic rate, heart rate or blood glucose relative to left-nostril or normal breathing. Telles and colleagues measured a nostril-differentiated rise in metabolic rate and autonomic activity, which is the most commonly cited basis for the energizing-channel claim. Results across the wider literature are mixed, and independent replication at scale is lacking. (mechanistic)

Effect sizes are small, samples are limited, many studies come from a small number of overlapping groups, and independent replication is sparse — so the autonomic-laterality claim (that one nostril drives one branch of the nervous system) should be read as an unsettled hypothesis rather than an established finding. Any effect may also come from slow attentive breathing generally rather than from the side used. This is best treated as a low-risk traditional attention aid, not a medical energizing protocol.
