Mental Rehearsal and Imagery, Made Practical

The neuroscience behind why imagining practice works — and how to do it right

What is mental rehearsal in sport psychology?

In sport psychology, mental rehearsal — also called motor imagery — is systematically imagining yourself performing a skill, and it has a genuine research base showing measurable performance improvements across athletic and other domains. The effects are real but modest, and the honest summary is that mental practice reliably beats no practice while remaining clearly inferior to physical practice; its best use is as an addition to training, not a replacement for it. Meta-analytic work finds the gains are largest when imagery is vivid and multi-sensory, first-person rather than watched from outside, process-focused on how the movement is executed rather than on winning, and rehearsed in real time instead of fast-forwarded. It also works better for skills with a large cognitive component than for those governed mainly by strength or endurance, and better for people who already have the movement in their repertoire — imagery appears to rehearse and refine a motor pattern rather than install one from nothing. The proposed mechanism is that imagining a movement activates much of the same motor planning circuitry as executing it, so the representation gets practised without the physical load. Alan Richardson’s early basketball free-throw work is the study most often cited in popular accounts; it is small and methodologically limited by modern standards, so the confidence here rests on the accumulated literature rather than on that one experiment.

Mental rehearsal is one of the best-supported performance tools in sport psychology, yet most people do it wrong: they imagine the outcome (winning, success) rather than the process (how the movement feels). Alan Richardson’s classic 1967 experiment and decades of subsequent research show that process imagery, done with vividness and consistency, primes motor pathways and builds the mental representations that expert performance depends on.
