The conditions that bias the brain toward flow, graded by evidence
What triggers flow, and how do you get into it on demand?
Worth separating two things that often get merged. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, the psychologist who identified and named flow, described the conditions under which it arises — clear goals, immediate feedback, and a balance between the challenge of the task and your skill — alongside the features people report while in it, such as merged action and awareness, altered sense of time, and loss of self-consciousness. He did not publish a numbered list of "flow triggers." That framing is Steven Kotler’s, who took Csikszentmihalyi’s conditions as a base and expanded them into a much longer catalogue of psychological, environmental, social, and creative triggers. Attributing that list to Csikszentmihalyi is a common mistake and this page keeps them apart. On the evidence: the core conditions (clear goals, immediate feedback, a challenge-skill balance) are well supported; the longer trigger lists and the neurochemical claims often attached to them are more speculative and should be read with care.
Flow is the state of complete absorption where action and awareness merge and performance peaks. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi arrived at it by asking people to report what they were doing and how they felt at random moments through the day, and finding that the most rewarding experiences people described were not the restful ones but the demanding ones, where a hard task met a matched skill. You cannot will yourself into it, but you can set up the conditions that make it more likely — and here it is worth being precise about language, because the word "triggers" and the numbered lists that go with it come from Steven Kotler, not from Csikszentmihalyi. Csikszentmihalyi wrote about conditions and about what the state feels like from inside. Kotler later built a longer catalogue of levers on top of that foundation. Both are worth knowing; conflating them is how people end up citing Csikszentmihalyi for claims he never made, particularly the neurochemical ones.
