The OPTIMAL theory of attention and why where you direct your mind changes your motor output
External focus: what is it, and why does it work?
External focus wins for most people most of the time: attend to the intended EFFECT of a movement — the target, where the ball lands, pushing the floor away — rather than to your own body mechanics, which is internal focus ("bend your knees", "tuck your elbow"). The practical translation is a cue swap: "bend your knees" becomes "push the floor away"; "swing your arm through" becomes "push the ball toward the target"; "tighten your core" becomes "feel the ground pushing back"; "keep your back straight" becomes "make the bar travel in a straight line". Across more than two decades of experiments led by Gabriele Wulf, external focus consistently outperforms internal focus for both learning a skill and executing it under pressure, with moderate-to-large effect sizes and, unusually for this field, a strong replication record — Chua and colleagues' 2021 systematic reviews pooled more than 100 studies and found the advantage holds rather than resting on a few labs. Wulf and Lewthwaite's OPTIMAL theory explains it in two parts: attending to an external effect lets the motor system self-organize automatically (the constrained action hypothesis), whereas attending to your own limbs replaces that fast automatic control with slower conscious control; and external focus also supports the sense of competence that sustains learning. Two rules govern the swap. The reference point must sit outside your body — "point your finger at the target" is still internal, because you are attending to the finger — and generally the further out it sits, the larger the benefit. The OPTIMAL (Optimizing Performance Through Intrinsic Motivation and Attention for Learning) theory explains the two mechanisms — automatic motor activation and motivational enhancement — and has practical implications for coaching, instruction, and self-directed performance improvement.
