Physical Metaphor: Lakoff and Johnson on Abstract Thought
Lakoff and Johnson argued abstract ideas are grasped through physical metaphor: map an unfamiliar concept onto a bodily experience to make it stick.
Why it works
In Metaphors We Live By (1980), Lakoff and Johnson made a claim about language that turned out to be a claim about thought: the physical metaphors buried in ordinary speech are not ornament, they are the machinery of the concept. We say an argument is a journey ("we have covered a lot of ground"), that understanding is grasping, that time is a path, that affection is warmth — and we cannot easily say those things any other way, which is their evidence that the abstract concept is structured BY the bodily one rather than merely decorated with it. Their argument is philosophical and linguistic: a systematic analysis of how metaphors cluster into coherent families, not an experiment. The practical consequence is that a new abstract idea has no handle until it borrows one from something you have physically experienced — so deliberately choosing a vivid physical metaphor supplies that handle on purpose instead of leaving it to whichever stale metaphor you happened to absorb first.
How to do it
- When encountering a new abstract concept, ask: "What physical or spatial experience does this resemble?"
- Articulate the metaphor explicitly: "This works like water flowing through a funnel — pressure builds when the opening narrows."
- Test the metaphor by pushing it: where does it break down? The boundary reveals where the concept itself is different.
Evidence
Conceptual metaphor theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980) is well established in cognitive linguistics and philosophy of mind. It is important to be clear about what kind of claim it is: their case rests on systematic analysis of language, not on experiments, so it is a powerful descriptive framework rather than a measured effect. Separately, experimental work on grounded cognition finds that processing abstract concepts activates sensorimotor regions, which is consistent with the view that bodily metaphors are functionally involved in understanding rather than decorative. Gentner’s (1983) structure-mapping theory clarifies the mechanism by which a physical metaphor supplies a handle: it is the relational structure of the base domain, not its surface features, that transfers to the target. The strong "all cognition is embodied" thesis is still contested. Note also that a well-publicized branch of downstream embodied-cognition research — the metaphor-priming studies claiming that incidental physical experience shifts abstract judgment (holding a warm cup, physical cleanliness and moral judgment, and similar) — has a poor replication record, and none of this practice rests on those findings. Lakoff and Johnson's linguistic argument and the neuroimaging work on sensorimotor activation are separate from that literature and are not undermined by its failures. That deliberately choosing a physical metaphor aids comprehension is a reasonable inference; it has not been isolated as a tested intervention.

Choosing a metaphor that is familiar but imprecise, then using it long past the point where it misleads — the metaphor becomes a crutch that blocks a more accurate understanding.
