Attention residue when switching work tasks
Part of your attention stays stuck on the last task when you switch — so finish or fully park one thing before starting the next.
Why it works
When you switch tasks, part of your attention stays stuck on the previous one — "attention residue" that measurably degrades performance on the new task. Sophie Leroy, who named and tested the effect, traced it to unfinished cognitive processing: an incomplete task leaves goals and plans still active, and that activation competes for the limited attentional capacity the new task needs. This is why the answer to "why is it so hard to do my work?" is often not laziness or the difficulty of the work — it is that you never arrived at it with full capacity in the first place. Leroy also found the residue is reduced when you reach a sense of completion, which is the practical opening: you cannot always finish, but you can close the loop by recording exactly where you stopped and what comes next, which lets the planning process stand down. Rapidly toggling between work and a glance at email keeps residue continuously topped up, so you never operate at full cognitive capacity all day.
How to do it
- Work on one task to a natural stopping point before switching to another.
- If you must switch mid-task, jot a quick note on exactly where you are and what is next.
- Avoid "quick checks" of messages mid-block — each one leaves residue that lingers after you return.
Evidence
Directly supported by Sophie Leroy’s 2009 controlled laboratory experiments on attention residue, which found that performance on a new task suffers when attention remains on a prior, unfinished task. Note the attribution: Leroy is the researcher who identified and tested the effect; Cal Newport later popularised it in Deep Work, and the term is now often attributed to him by readers who met it there first. Broader task-switching research likewise documents switch costs. Ophir et al. found that heavy media multitaskers were worse at filtering irrelevant information and switching between tasks, which cuts against the assumption that habitual switchers adapt to it — though that study is cross-sectional, so it cannot establish that the multitasking caused the deficit rather than the reverse. Residue is reduced, not eliminated, by finishing — and time pressure can leave residue even after completion; the practical lever is fewer switches.
