Active Recall: The Most Effective Way to Study
The testing effect, retrieval practice, and how to build active recall into every session
What is active recall, and why does it beat rereading?
Active recall means retrieving information from memory — through self-quizzing, flashcards, or blank-page recall — rather than passively rereading it. The testing effect (also called the retrieval practice effect) is one of the most replicated findings in cognitive psychology: retrieving a memory makes it more retrievable in the future, far more so than re-reading the same material. Roediger and Karpicke's work is the standard reference, and the pattern it exposed is the reason this matters so much in practice — students who reread rated themselves more confident than students who self-tested, and then remembered substantially less on a later test. Confidence and retention moved in opposite directions. The practical form of an active recall test is simple: close the book and produce the answer from memory before checking it. A blank page and the prompt "what do I know about this?" outperforms highlighting; a flashcard only counts if you attempt the answer before flipping it; and a failed retrieval attempt is still productive, because the effort of searching memory is where much of the benefit lives — provided you then see the correct answer. Spacing the tests out rather than massing them compounds the gain further. The effect generalizes across ages, content types, and populations, and holds for meaningful material, not just word lists.
Rereading feels like studying because the material is fluent and familiar. That fluency is an illusion — recognition is not retrieval, and retrieval is what long-term memory requires. Active recall is the practice of retrieving information without the source in front of you, using whatever medium works: flashcards, blank-page dumps, practice questions, or teaching someone else. The cognitive science behind it is solid enough that Dunlosky and colleagues rated practice testing as the highest-utility study technique in their 2013 review. - Use minimal retrieval cues — reduce hints over time
Start with cued recall (a question), then move to free recall (no cue) as the memory strengthens.
- Self-assess honestly — fail the card if you needed a hint
A card is only "known" when you produced a complete, correct answer with no hints.
